How often did I lift my eyes,
To glimpse Your face beyond the skies.
For years I searched with all my heart,
Yet one last step kept us apart.
The day I drifted far from You,
My soul broke loose and lost its view.
A slave to every vain desire,
Yet lonely still, my heart reached higher.
I could not tell if I pursued,
Or fled from all I thought I knew.
Through joy and grief the years rolled by,
Like drifting clouds across the sky.
Sorrow closed on every side,
Yet quietly You walked beside.
Words could never tell it all,
Yet You remained through every fall.
No more I wrestle with the wind,
Your faithful promise draws me in.
I followed deep love's quiet call,
For forty years You knew them all.
I gladly lay my whole life down,
For You, my firm and faithful ground.
Because You love me as I stand,
I'll place each day within Your hand.
