Among Old Friends in Liaocheng

In the spring of 2016, during a visit to China, I reunited with classmates and close friends in the ancient city of Liaocheng. We spent an evening recalling our student years, and the next day wandered through the restored old city under clear skies and a gentle breeze. The broad public squares were filled with life. Elderly residents practiced tai chi, danced, played shuttlecock, and exercised with remarkable grace. Others wrote elegant Chinese calligraphy across the stone pavement with brushes dipped only in water, a quiet reminder that traditional culture still lived among ordinary people. Guided by my classmate Luan Zhenbo, who was then serving in the Liaocheng municipal government, we visited Guangyue Tower, the Shrine of the Seven Worthies, and other historic landmarks. Once a prosperous canal city, Liaocheng had declined after the Grand Canal lost its importance. In recent years, however, the ancient city had been carefully restored, bringing back its waterways, architecture, and cultural heritage. Standing before Guangyue Tower and the newly rebuilt Shrine of the Seven Worthies, I felt not only the weight of history but also the quiet revival of Chinese civilization. Though I have spent many years overseas pursuing medicine and science, my love for Chinese learning has never faded. This visit filled me with gratitude—for old friendships, for the endurance of culture, and for the hope that a nation's spirit may yet be renewed.
Old friends returned where youthful footsteps stayed;
The ancient walls still cast their quiet shade.
Guangyue Tower rose through the morning sky;
Its timeless roof watched centuries drift by.
The sages spoke where silent willows grew;
Their words still lived in all we dared pursue.
Though oceans lie beyond my youthful dreams,
My heart still walks beside those ancient streams.
