Remembering Jinan
Written on the sixteenth anniversary of graduating from the seven-year medical program at Shandong Medical University. Looking back on youth in Jinan, years of medical training, a career that led across the Pacific, and an enduring longing for home.
As boys we left our homes with hopeful eyes;
In Jinan met where youthful promise lies.
The hills stood green, the Yellow River wide;
Its rolling clouds became our constant guide.
We sought old wisdom written through the years;
Great minds became the voices in our ears.
We climbed Mount Tai above the morning light;
And found stillness where Lingyan crowned the height.
Seven years passed like pages turned by air;
Sixteen have flown beyond our youthful care.
Once shy at parting, scarcely fully grown;
Now children gather where our seeds were sown.
We chose the healer's path without retreat;
Its bitter herbs made every trial complete.
Through quiet toil we served both weak and strong;
The road was hard, yet hope endured along.
Across the seas we crossed to seek new light;
Life's altar called us onward through the night.
Life hurried on through labor, loss, and gain;
My native fields still blossom after rain.
Like flowing rivers all our days depart;
Yet Jinan keeps its spring within my heart.
Where willow shades embrace the ancient streams;
Lotus blossoms still return within my dreams.
Old friends still gather where the rivers wind;
Soft songs still drift upon the evening wind.
When all is done and worldly journeys cease,
I'll seek my native hills in quiet peace.
