Yosemite National Park, nestled along the western slopes of California’s Sierra Nevada, is celebrated throughout the world for its granite cliffs, ancient forests, glacial valleys, and magnificent waterfalls. Through the heart of the valley flows the Merced River, whose snow-fed waters have spent countless millennia carving one of North America’s most spectacular landscapes. Each spring and early summer, the melting snow descends from the high country in torrents, transforming sheer granite walls into ribbons of white water. Among Yosemite’s many waterfalls, none are more celebrated than Nevada Fall and Vernal Fall. To experience them both in a single day, hikers traditionally ascend by the John Muir Trail and return by the Mist Trail. Though the loop measures less than ten kilometers, it gathers together nearly every landscape that has made Yosemite famous—towering mountains, evergreen forests, rushing rivers, deep granite canyons, and waterfalls of extraordinary power.

The trail bears the name of a man whose life has become inseparable from Yosemite itself—John Muir (1838–1914). Born in Scotland and later immigrating to the United States, Muir devoted his life to exploring the Sierra Nevada and became one of the world’s most influential advocates for wilderness preservation. He wandered alone through mountains for months at a time, studying glaciers, forests, rivers, and alpine meadows, then transformed those experiences into prose of remarkable beauty and conviction. Muir believed that human beings require more than food and shelter; the soul itself must be nourished by encounters with wild places. Through his writing and tireless advocacy, Yosemite gained lasting protection and eventually became one of America’s greatest national parks. Today, every step along the John Muir Trail recalls not only a remarkable naturalist, but also a philosophy that calls people to approach the natural world with humility, gratitude, and reverence.

The complete John Muir Trail extends approximately 340 kilometers (211 miles), running southward from Yosemite Valley across the high Sierra before ending at Mount Whitney, the highest summit in the contiguous United States. It is widely regarded as one of the world’s great long-distance hiking trails. Most visitors, however, experience only its opening section. Beginning at Happy Isles, the trail follows the Merced River, climbs steadily through Clark Point, and reaches the crest of Nevada Fall after about 3.4 kilometers (2.1 miles). The ascent is broad and well graded, tracing the mountainside rather than clinging to the river. Along the way, sweeping vistas unfold across granite domes, pine forests, and the deep Merced canyon below. Unlike the steep and mist-soaked descent of the Mist Trail, the John Muir Trail offers a quieter rhythm, allowing hikers to appreciate Yosemite’s grandeur through gradually changing perspectives rather than sudden drama.

If the John Muir Trail reveals Yosemite through broad panoramas, the Mist Trail invites visitors into the very heart of the waterfalls themselves. Most hikers choose it for the descent from Nevada Fall. Carved directly into the granite cliffs beside Vernal Fall, the trail stretches about 5.1 kilometers (3.2 miles), with its most celebrated section descending from the top of Vernal Fall to the valley floor. Hundreds of massive stone steps follow the contours of the cliff while the Merced River rushes only a few meters away. During spring and early summer, when snowmelt reaches its peak, exploding spray rises high above the gorge. Long before reaching the waterfall, hikers find themselves wrapped in cool mist, their clothes dampened by the drifting water. It is this ever-present veil of spray that gave the trail its name. On bright afternoons, sunlight refracts through countless droplets, casting brilliant rainbows across the gorge. Surrounded by thunderous water, drifting mist, and vivid color, one experiences not merely a hike, but a profound encounter with the living power of the mountains.

Nevada Fall plunges approximately 181 meters (594 feet), making it one of Yosemite’s tallest and most commanding waterfalls. Its name comes from the Spanish word nevada, meaning ‘snow-covered,’ an apt tribute to the snowfields that nourish the Merced River throughout much of the year. Above the brink, the river glides quietly across broad granite slabs with almost deceptive calm, as though unaware of the immense drop awaiting it. Crossing the footbridge at the crest, visitors witness a remarkable transformation. The broad river suddenly narrows, gathering its entire force into a powerful torrent that accelerates within only a few dozen meters before hurling itself into open space. The impact below sends towering clouds of spray into the air, while the roar reverberates throughout the canyon. Even from a considerable distance, the vibration seems to travel through the granite beneath one’s feet. Standing beside the brink, one looks down upon water disappearing into the depths below; looking back, the entire waterfall hangs like a white banner against Yosemite’s immense granite walls.

If Nevada Fall inspires awe through its overwhelming scale, Vernal Fall leaves an equally lasting impression through intimacy. Rising approximately 97 meters (317 feet), it is only about half as tall as its larger neighbor, yet many visitors remember it more vividly because the Mist Trail passes almost beside the waterfall itself. The word vernal means ‘spring-like,’ and nowhere is that name more fitting than during the season of melting snow. Then the Merced River pours over the cliff with astonishing force, filling the surrounding air with countless droplets that drift across the trail. Under clear skies, rainbows often appear as naturally as the mist itself. Step by step, hikers climb the granite staircase with the thunder of falling water echoing beside them. Conversation fades beneath the roar, replaced by the sound of rushing water and the cool breath of the spray. Some pause only briefly, while others remain for long moments, quietly watching the endless movement of river, light, and stone. Here one does not merely observe nature; one becomes, if only for a little while, part of its unfolding rhythm.
