Rancheria Falls
蘭切里亞瀑布（Rancheria Falls）坐落於內華達山脈西坡，瀑布所匯聚的溪水，主要來自冬季積雪與春夏融雪。每年五月、六月，積雪大量消融，溪流奔騰而下，形成高約一百五十英尺（約四十六米）的多級飛瀑；到了八月，雪水漸盡，溪流回歸平緩，因此瀑布也少了春日奔騰咆哮的氣勢。
Rancheria Falls lies on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. The stream that feeds the waterfall is supplied primarily by winter snowpack and the melting snow of spring and early summer. During May and June, the snow melts rapidly, sending torrents of water down the mountainside and creating a series of cascades with a total drop of about 150 feet (46 m). By August, the snowmelt has largely diminished, the creek returns to a gentler flow, and the waterfall loses much of its springtime roar.
蘭切里亞瀑布步道並不長，全程約兩英里，步道平緩，走起來原本應該十分輕鬆。然而我剛開始走在平地上，竟已有些氣喘，或許是剛從接近海平面的弗雷斯諾（Fresno），一路驅車來到海拔約七千二百英尺（2195米）的內華達山脈（Sierra Nevada），身體還來不及適應。
The Rancheria Falls Trail is not a long hike. Stretching only about two miles round trip, the trail is gentle and should be an easy walk. Yet I found myself short of breath almost from the very beginning. Perhaps it was because I had driven directly from Fresno, which lies near sea level, to an elevation of about 7,200 feet (2,195 m) in the Sierra Nevada before my body had time to adjust.
到了步道盡頭的瀑布腳下，其實真正的探索才剛剛開始。若想登上瀑布頂端，便只能循著遊人踏出的原始山路向上攀爬。沒有步道，沒有木階，也沒有護欄，六十餘度的岩坡只能手腳並用，借著裸露的花崗岩和盤根錯節的樹根一步步向上。山頂依舊保持著原始風貌，林木繁茂，沒有人工修整的痕跡，彷彿仍停留在幾百萬年前的模樣。
At the foot of the waterfall, where the maintained trail ends, the real exploration begins. Anyone wishing to reach the top must follow a rough path worn by previous hikers. There are no constructed trails, no wooden steps, and no handrails. The granite slope, rising at more than sixty degrees, requires the use of both hands and feet, climbing carefully over exposed rock and tangled tree roots. Above the falls, the forest remains in its natural state, dense with trees and untouched by human alteration, as though it had remained unchanged for millions of years.
攀上瀑布頂端，白雲悠悠，鳥鳴喈喈，溪水在花崗岩上蜿蜒流淌，叮咚作響，忽然躍下岩壁，白浪懸空。然而下來後站在瀑布下方的巨石之上，水霧撲面而來，清爽無比，迎著陽光，映出道道彩虹，溪流繼續沿著花崗岩流瀉而下，遠處則是一望無際的松杉覆蓋群山，層巒疊翠，清幽開闊，令人流連忘返。
Standing atop the waterfall, I watched white clouds drift overhead while birds sang through the forest. The creek meandered across smooth granite with a gentle murmur before suddenly leaping over the cliff in a curtain of white water. Returning to the base, I stood upon a massive boulder as cool mist washed over me, refreshing beyond words. In the sunlight, delicate rainbows shimmered through the spray. The stream continued its descent over polished granite, while endless pine-covered mountains stretched into the distance, their layered ridges creating a landscape of quiet beauty that was difficult to leave.
這裡並非著名景點，遊人卻遠比我想像中多，三五成群，不時有人坐在岩石上戲水、拍照，短短一個多小時，至少遇見了五六十位遊客，頗有些出乎意料。
Although Rancheria Falls is not a well-known destination, it attracted far more visitors than I had expected. Small groups of hikers gathered throughout the area, some sitting on the rocks with their feet in the water, others taking photographs beside the falls. In little more than an hour, I encountered at least fifty or sixty people—far more than I had imagined.
