No Road Home

A Ballad

Spring had returned, and the earth awakened once more. The Winter Olympics had just ended, yet the echoes of war still lingered across the world. Peace, so often desired, remained fragile. Then came the story of the chained woman in Xuzhou. It stirred a wave of public grief and disbelief, raising questions that no official explanation could easily silence. Long after the headlines faded, the unease remained. I found no peace until these thoughts were given voice in verse.
Each dawn arrived yet never brought me back;
Each night returned with sorrow on its track.
One reckless blow unmade my former days;
One stolen road became a lifelong maze.
I wandered far where no kind voices stayed;
A lone bird sang while all my hope decayed.
When every wound had stripped my soul laid bare,
I learned the world had never known me there.,

A stranger's road became my prison wall;
I crossed its gate—and never left at all.
The law stood mute, while wolves were free to reign;
Each face I met looked calmly past my pain.
The hands that swore to guard instead betrayed;
Their silence bound me deeper every day.
Through endless nights my body ceased to be;
Eight children came, yet none could set me free.

My teeth were gone; my wounded tongue fell still,
Yet Heaven spared the likeness of my will.
They broke the flesh, but reached no deeper part;
Their chains could bind my hands—not all my heart.
The crowds rejoiced beneath triumphant skies;
I watched their glory through forgotten eyes.
They crowned an age of glory, pride, and fame;
In chains I lived, forgotten without name.

The crowds acclaimed a young Olympian's name;
One nation lifted her to lasting fame.
We both were daughters beneath the selfsame sky;
One learned to soar, while one forgot to fly.
I too was cherished, safe from want or care;
My parents held me like a jewel rare.
One night I vanished, leaving not a trace;
No soul could ever find my hiding place.

My father searched through every road and plain;
Each rising dawn renewed his grief again.
His heart grew frail beneath unending pain;
In Heaven still he calls my name in vain.
A thousand watchful eyes surveyed the land;
No passing face escaped their strict command.
Yet when a daughter disappeared one day,
No soul was sent to trace her stolen way.

Bound by an iron collar, day by day;
Only in dreams my father found the way.
My life hung by the thinnest thread of air;
Who waits beyond when no one meets me there?
I dreamed of Sichuan wrapped in springtime light;
Mount Emei glowed beneath the fading night.
Purple clouds drifted through the endless sky;
I met the saints—but not my father's eyes.

The immortals heard my silent plea;
They stirred the world to look and speak for me.
My native voice, my hair, my face remained;
At last my true identity was claimed.
The lies stood firm where truth should long have led;
They painted white what should have stained them red.
Though truth stood clear for every eye to see;
They knew my face—but would not name it me.

Though countless voices rose, more walls were raised;
Their words were chained, their every whisper erased.
My heart had frozen long beyond all pain;
I wished to see my father once again.
I turned to gaze upon the world below;
Only mist remained where home should glow.
A thousand roads were made for all to roam;
But which one leads me back to my own home?
