Contentment
「神造萬物，各按其時成為美好，
又將永遠安置在世人心裡。」
“He has made everything beautiful in its time.
He has also set eternity in the human heart.”
喜樂不是因為環境，而是因為知足；知足不是因為擁有世界，而是因為得著基督。
Joy does not come from circumstances, but from contentment; and true contentment does not come from possessing the world, but from possessing Christ.
小時候到伯父家，牆上貼著一句話：「人家騎馬我騎驢，後面還有推車的。」長輩常藉這句話教導人要知足。它確實能安慰一顆失落的心，卻是一種無奈的知足：因為總有人比自己更苦，所以只好接受現實。然而，它並沒有回答一個更深的問題——究竟什麼才是真正值得滿足的？
When I was a child, I often visited my uncle’s home. On the wall hung a saying: “While others ride horses, I ride a donkey; behind me there is someone pushing a cart.” The older generation often used these words to teach contentment. They could comfort a discouraged heart, but theirs was a reluctant contentment: because someone else was always worse off, one should simply accept reality. Yet the saying never answered a deeper question: What is truly worthy of satisfying the human heart?
人的心其實很難知足。一個願望實現了，很快又會生出新的願望；一個目標達成了，以為從此便心滿意足，真正達到以後，卻發現不過如此。於是，人又開始尋找新的高峰、新的成就、新的體驗。人的慾望不是一條終點明確的道路，而是一條不斷延伸的地平線。
The human heart is remarkably difficult to satisfy. As soon as one desire is fulfilled, another quickly arises. We reach a goal believing it will finally bring lasting satisfaction, only to discover that it is surprisingly ordinary. Then we begin searching for new heights, new achievements, and new experiences. Human desire is not a road with a clear destination, but a horizon that continually recedes.
然而，人為什麼會有這樣永不止息的渴望？因為人的生命有限，卻渴望經歷無限。我們不僅希望擁有更多，更希望活得更廣、更深、更豐富。有人熱愛旅行，希望走遍天下；有人沉醉電影，藉著別人的故事經歷不同的人生；有人終身閱讀，在書本中探索歷史、思想與文明。人的心彷彿總想經歷整個世界。
Why, then, does the human heart never cease longing? Because our lives are finite, yet we yearn for the infinite. We do not merely desire to possess more; we long to live more broadly, more deeply, and more fully. Some travel the world, hoping to see every land. Others lose themselves in films, experiencing countless lives through the stories of others. Still others spend a lifetime reading, exploring history, ideas, and civilizations through books. Deep within us is a longing to experience the whole world.
其實，這種渴望並非偶然。聖經說：「神造萬物，各按其時成為美好，又將永遠安置在世人心裡。」（傳道書三章十一節）神把永遠放在人心裡，因此人的心永遠不會被有限的事物完全填滿。世界再大，人生再精彩，也終究有限；而人的心，卻始終在尋找那無限的歸宿。
This longing is no accident. Scripture declares, ‘He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart.’ (Ecclesiastes 3:11). God has placed eternity within us, and therefore no finite thing can ever completely satisfy the human heart. However vast the world may be, however rich our experiences, they remain finite. Yet the heart continues to seek its infinite home.
離開神以後，人便誤以為，只要經歷更多的世界，就能填補心中的空缺。於是，我們不停地追逐新的地方、新的知識、新的人際關係、新的成就，以為下一站便是滿足。然而，每一次抵達，都只是新的開始；每一次得到，又引出新的渴望。問題並不在於世界太小，而是在於人的心原本就是為神而造。
Separated from God, humanity mistakenly believes that experiencing more of the world will fill the emptiness within. We pursue new places, new knowledge, new relationships, and new accomplishments, imagining that the next destination will finally satisfy us. Yet every arrival becomes another beginning, and every achievement awakens another desire. The problem is not that the world is too small, but that the human heart was created for God.
基督信仰並不是要人放棄探索世界，而是把世界放回它真正的位置。世界固然美麗，卻不是人的歸宿；人生固然豐富，卻不是永恆本身。當人以世界代替神，再多的經歷也不能滿足；當人先得著神，世界的一切反而都恢復了它原有的美好。
The Christian faith does not ask us to abandon the world; rather, it restores the world to its proper place. The world is indeed beautiful, yet it is not our final home. Life is rich and full, yet it is not eternity itself. When we try to replace God with the world, no abundance of experiences can satisfy us. But when we first find God, the beauty of the world is restored to its rightful meaning.
因為基督不是世界的一部分，祂乃是世界的創造者；然而，祂又親自進入這個世界，成為真正的人。祂經歷了人的喜樂，也承受了人的憂傷；祂走過曠野，也登上高山；祂看見人的榮耀，也看見人的敗壞；祂最後背負世人的罪，被釘在十字架上，又從死裡復活，勝過了罪惡、死亡和這個世界。因此，祂不只是知道這個世界，祂乃是真正勝過了這個世界，也唯有祂能把世界真正的意義啟示給人。
Christ is not merely part of this world; He is its Creator. Yet He willingly entered the world and became truly human. He shared our joys and bore our sorrows, walked through the wilderness and stood upon the mountains, witnessed both the dignity and the brokenness of humanity, and at last carried the sins of the world to the cross. Rising from the dead, He triumphed over sin, death, and the world itself. Christ does not simply know the world—He has overcome it, and He alone can reveal its true meaning.
因此，真正的知足，不是因為已經擁有了一切，而是因為已經得著了那位超越萬有的主。當人得著基督，便不再需要藉著不斷追逐世界來證明自己的價值，也不再需要藉著無止境的經歷來填補心中的空虛。因為在祂裡面，我們已經找到了生命的源頭、真理的答案和永恆的歸宿。世界仍然值得欣賞，人生仍然值得努力，但它們都不再是我們敬拜的對象，而是神所賜、美好而有限的恩典。
True contentment, therefore, is not found in possessing everything, but in possessing the One who is above all things. Those who have found Christ no longer need to chase the world in order to prove their worth, nor must they fill the emptiness within by endlessly pursuing new experiences. In Him they have found the source of life, the answer to truth, and their eternal home. The world remains beautiful, and life remains worth living with diligence, yet neither becomes an object of worship. Both are received instead as good, though finite, gifts from God.
回想伯父家牆上的那句話：「人家騎馬我騎驢，後面還有推車的。」它教人知足，卻是從比較中尋找安慰；而基督所賜的知足，卻不是因為還有人比我更缺乏，而是因為我已經得著了那位創造世界、進入世界、並勝過世界的主。得著基督的人，不必擁有整個世界，因為他已經得著了世界真正的意義；他也不必再不停地尋找生命的答案，因為那答案就在基督裡。這樣的知足，不是無奈的妥協，而是因認識真理而生的平安，也是基督所賜、沒有人能奪去的喜樂。
Looking back, I still remember the saying on my uncle’s wall: ‘While others ride horses, I ride a donkey; behind me there is someone pushing a cart.’ It taught contentment through comparison, finding comfort in the fact that someone else had less. The contentment Christ gives is altogether different. It does not rest on comparing ourselves with others, but on possessing the One who created the world, entered the world, and overcame the world. Those who have found Christ need not possess the whole world, for they have already found its true meaning. Nor must they continue searching for the answer to life, for that answer is found in Him. Such contentment is not reluctant resignation, but the peace that comes from knowing the truth, and the joy that Christ gives—a joy that no one can take away.
